A Day at Smith’s Tropical Paradise in Kaui

Tucked into the lush Wailua River Valley, Smith’s Tropical Paradise is a 30-acre garden sanctuary that feels like a step into old Kauai. We spent a relaxed afternoon here, wandering beneath swaying palms, feeding curious birds, and soaking in the quiet beauty of this family-run estate.

A Garden Rooted in Tradition

Smith’s Tropical Paradise is part of the larger Smith’s Kauai experience—a family business that began in 1947 with a single rowboat and a dream. Over the decades, it’s grown into a beloved destination that includes a luau, river cruises, and this expansive garden park.

The grounds are beautifully maintained, with over a mile of meandering pathways. We explored fruit orchards filled with jackfruit, starfruit, and macadamia trees, and admired replicas of Polynesian and Filipino huts nestled among the foliage. The Japanese-themed garden island, complete with a koi pond and traditional landscaping, offered a serene spot for reflection.

Feeding the Birds: A Fun (and Feisty) Experience

One of the unexpected highlights of our visit was feeding the resident birds. At the garden entrance, small cups of bird food are available for purchase. Be prepared—the birds here are not shy. They’ll flock to you eagerly, especially near the entrance where they seem to know food is forthcoming. It was delightful and a bit chaotic, with peacocks, ducks, chickens, and other birds vying for treats. If you’re visiting with small children, it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on them during this part of the experience.

A Peaceful Afternoon Well Spent

Beyond the bird encounters, the gardens offered a tranquil setting to unwind. We took our time strolling the paths, pausing to admire the vibrant tropical flowers and the gentle flow of the Wailua River nearby. Benches scattered throughout the park provided perfect spots to sit and take in the surroundings.
