Exploring the Grand Canyon of the Pacific: Waimea Canyon in Kauai
Waimea Canyon
Waimea Canyon is often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” but that doesn’t quite capture the feeling of standing at its edge. Located on the western side of Kauai, its layered red and green cliffs and distant waterfalls offer breathtaking views that are both rugged and serene.
Starting the Day
We set out for our day-trip to Waimea Canyon State Park and drove along Route 550, which winds its way up the mountain. Before heading into the park, we stopped at a local market in Waimea to grab sandwiches, chips, and a few cold drinks so we could have a picnic in the park. The picnic was recommended by a local since there are very limited services in the park.

Exploring the Canyon
We stopped at several lookouts, including Waimea Canyon Lookout where we enjoyed our picnic lunch. We hiked up to the overlook and were able to see several waterfalls in the distance, including Waipo’o Falls.
Each overlook in the park offers a slightly different angle of the canyon. We took short walks to nearby viewpoints—nothing strenuous, just enough to stretch our legs and get closer to the edge for better photos.
Our Gecko Hitchhiker
A Gecko Hitchhiker
Somewhere along the way, we realized we had a tiny gecko hitching a ride on the car. He was just hanging out near the window, catching views like the rest of us. Once we pulled into one of the parking areas, we gently helped him safely onto the grass.

Fresh Coconut Water
On our way back to the resort, we spotted a small roadside stand selling fresh coconut water. They offered coconut water in a cup or the kind served in a whole coconut. It was cold, naturally sweet, and perfect after a warm afternoon of sightseeing. We also picked up some Apple Bananas, a unique fruit that really tastes like apples.

Kauai Coffee Farm Visit
As we made our way back toward Lihue, we decided to stop at the Kauai Coffee store near Eleele. It was a fun, easy stop and totally worth it. We enjoyed walking among the coffee trees, tasting several blends, and picking up a few bags to bring home. It was fun to see how coffee is grown and processed right there on the island—and the views from the farm were pretty, too.
After a day of canyon views, fresh fruit, and warm island sun, we made our way back to the resort, tired but grateful for beautiful the experience.
