Sailing the Na Pali Coast: A Sunset Cruise to Remember
Na Pali Coast Sunset Boat Tour
The Na Pali Coast of Kauai feels almost otherworldly—a stretch of rugged cliffs, emerald valleys, and hidden sea caves that have graced the silver screen in films like Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean, and King Kong. Experiencing it by boat during golden hour was at the top of our Kauai wish list.
Holo Holo Charters before the Cruise
Setting Sail with Holo Holo Charters
During our stay in Kauai, we booked a sunset sail with Holo Holo Charters, a company known for its warm hospitality and scenic catamaran tours. The crew greeted us with friendly smiles and helped everyone get settled. As we pulled away from the harbor, the crew turned up some fun, upbeat music to set a festive tone for our trip.
The Coastline Unveiled
You can’t reach the Na Pali Coast by road so traveling by boat is the only option. The rugged cliffs rise dramatically from the sea in bold green and gold colors, hiding secret waterfalls, sea caves and secret beaches. Even after all the photos I’d seen, the real thing still took my breath away.

Dining at Sea
Dinner on board was buffet-style with stir-fry dishes and tropical touches. While I didn’t feel up to eating, Dave said it was some of the best food of the entire trip—flavorful, fresh, and satisfying. A sunset champagne toast wrapped it all up with a celebratory note.
An Unexpected Turn (and a Lesson Learned)
This wasn’t our first sunset cruise—we’ve done three similar trips in Maui, where the water was much calmer, and I’ve always loved sitting up front. But the waters along the Na Pali Coast are wilder. This time, I sat at the front of the boat again, but the sea was rough, and we got absolutely soaked shortly after we made our initial departure.
Saltwater splashed into my eyes, and as I tried to walk into the cabin, I couldn’t see the stairs clearly and fell, scraping up both of my knees on the rough-textured deck.
The crew from Holo Holo Charters took great care of me, bandaging my knees and checking on me often. No one else in our group had issues. Even with the minor injury, I’d absolutely do it again. The views were stunning, and the experience was unforgettable.
Sunset magic
Sunset Magic
As we turned back toward port, the sun began its descent. The sky lit up and cast a brilliant orange glow across the water. It was one of those sunsets you want to bottle up and take home—a quiet close to a dramatic, beautiful day.
Final Thoughts
Our Na Pali Coast sunset cruise with Holo Holo Charters was full of unforgettable moments. The crew was excellent, the coastline was everything we imagined and more. If you go, take the crew’s advice seriously, come prepared for motion, and enjoy, it’s an amazing experience.
